If you opened a map of Kingston and dropped a pin right at the centre, you just might find it comes to rest right on top of 6 Grenville Crescent. There are walking paths and forests, the creek, rabbits (lots of rabbits), foxes and coyotes, deer and barred owls too. And it seems 1949 was a pretty good year for design. There are details throughout this house that have made their way through the decades, and we imagine the next owners will choose to keep many of them. There’s a quietness to this house, and a sort of peace that comes with it. It’s solid, and it feels that way too. Even the staircases seem to have chipped in, with their deep treads and gentle rise connecting the different levels of the home.

Depending on how you choose to use the space, there are anywhere from three to six bedrooms, though we think it probably works best as four. There are two full bathrooms, a powder room, main-floor laundry and a perfect work-from-home office. The in-law suite feels like a proper home within the home, making it particularly well suited to extended family, older children or guests. The main-floor rooms are spacious and west-facing, with huge windows that fill them with afternoon light and look out over the gardens and mature trees. They open onto a railing-less deck that feels almost like an extension of the house, connecting you directly to the backyard. Multiple fruit trees line the stone path to the back, and there’s so much space here, you understand pretty quickly why people are drawn to Grenville Park in the first place.
Then there’s the garage. Calling it deep doesn’t quite do it justice – it’s almost triple depth, and we’re told an airplane may even have been stored in here at one time. There’s plenty of driveway parking too.
These are our favourite houses – the one-of-a-kind, never-see-another-one-quite-like-it type of places. 6 Grenville is certainly that, but it’s also the combination of the house and where it sits that makes this place so special. Nearly 3,000 square feet, an enormous lot, mature trees and gardens, more than 12 acres of shared parkland, Little Cataraqui Creek and the Rideau Trail – all of it almost right in the middle of Kingston.
